Holiday Whimsy for a Baby Fairy

Checking my Facebook messages a few weeks ago, I received a custom order request to make a halo style head piece for a 6 month old baby girl. Mother mentioned that baby was going to wear a dress with lots of gold and to be photographed in a woodsy, whimsy setting with a fairy mood. 

Of course I accepted the order and made this cute headband to compliment the baby's red hair. The  mother contacted me yesterday to say that she loved the halo and she was going to forward a photo to me.  I'm so excited to see it and will post on my Facebook page and it here too.

I'm also entertained by the "name" of the dress mother chose for baby girl to wear.

It's called a "BONNIE" and that is my name too! Can hardly wait to see the pic with the halo!....So wonderful to have satisfied customers that take the time to let me know they like my work.

Lovely Woodland Halo

Made for a custom request, this gorgeous adult sized HALO is going to be used in a maternity photo shoot. 

I'm able to craft one of these lovely halos in about 4 hours time. And like an author that finishes a piece of writing only to return to it for edits and re-write, I do the same with my halo projects. 

I'll finish the piece without final glue and tac and let it rest. Give it another go over next day and then do the final touches. Once the pieces are wired and glued in place, making any design changes is almost impossible without doing damage to the halo so it's important to let a piece sit and see it with a new perspective.   

I craft my halos free hand as each one is an individual work of art. Having the colors and general idea of what the client wants is all I need to work the idea and placement in my head, and then just I start with the placement of the focal floral and work out from there with the smaller floral bits and greens.   

Size isn't an issue because I make them on a wrapped floral wire loop. The wire can be bent or formed to the models head for a better fit, and since I leave the backside free of foliage it's a simple task to bend the wire a bit.

I love this one especially since my beautiful daughter was my model for the finished product!...My customer loved it and I'm anxious to see a pic of HER beautiful pregnant model wearing it. 

Branding and Labeling Products

Placing a customized cute label or tag on your products is the finishing step in creating your beautiful props. 

This past weekend I was busy printing and cutting out fabric labels, hang tags, and business cards for both of my shops. I think I have enough to carry me through the holiday selling season and if not I'll make some more.

 

Going for the BLUES

The market for newborn props is flooded with gorgeous headbands halos wraps and tutus for the girly girls. But what about the boys?

I'm a huge fan of upcycling to make OOAK props. Give me a like new major brand sweater and I'll turn it into half a dozen hats and little pants for the boys.

RAYNOX and SPEEDLITE 50 mm Hell

Having major meltdown today while trying to take new pics of my work from yesterday. A few weeks ago while using my 5mm (my fav for props pics) the lens fell out of the body...How the heck that happened Ill never know....Can it even be repaired, and is fo where?....It's a CANON so maybe I should contact them?    

Today I tried using  my RAYNOX  DCR250 macro attachment and the DOF is too short. I can only get a super closeup of one part of the item...Now I'm back to using my 18-55 and the lighting is terrible today....Anyone use a SPEEDLITE 430 EX ? I can't get that thing to work for me to my picky standards.....I need some new pics!!

Please fell free to comment on any tips that I desperately need for using the SPEEDLITE properly!

Make a Photo Prop Pop With Eye Appeal

Getting into the prop way of thinking has been interesting and entertaining and I've learned that when making a photo prop that is "upcycled", it seems to be more likely to catch a photographers eye IF it's a touch shabby and not too neat or tidy or doesn't look like doll clothes suitable for an American or Cabbage Patch doll. For someone like me this is delicate balance between finishing too much, and having that just right balance between a store bought look, and a hand crafted style. 

I've been sewing for 35 years and in my history of the needle to cloth I have made everything from my own clothing as a teenager to home decor for my home, and hundreds of dolls dresses and clothing for dolls. 

This outfit in the pic below was finished to look like doll clothes. It was "too tidy" and in a word "commercial" or store bought  doll clothes. It didn't sell in my shop for the obvious reason: Photographers are not looking for doll clothes to model on newborns. I knew this when I made it but just couldn't see the outfit any other way than with a too tidy store bought look 

 

This morning I did a re-make on the same outfit removing the tidy elastic waist and adding a stitched zig zag to the edge to prevent raveling. I added belt loops made from the hem of the shirt I upcycled, and added a braided fabric belt also from the same fabric with a colored shoe lace as the third string of the braid. I also took off the yellow ribbon tassel as that was overkill of the doll clothes look, and took a better photo using the warm tones of the hardwood floor as a backdrop. This change balanced the pic with a warm backdrop to the cool grey of the outfit....Eye appeal was created so easily!  

This is the re-make of the outfit.......I changed the pic in my shop and within minutes it SOLD! 

This was a lesson in "blah" versus "awww!"

From Table Runner to Headbands..Lots of Photography Props

One colorful runner with fun trims and details was purchased for the table. BUT on second glance, my eyes started to see it as more!. Brain and eyes in a team effort began to see little headbands and fun mini head wraps, and Oh, I was in  upcycle  photography prop Heaven!

Here is what came out of the table runner cut into pieces like you see to the far right of the pic.... I felt like the Noah of creativity with enough to make 2 of everything!

It's a Bohemian Kind of Prop

My colorful and textured Czech heritage comes out when I play with color and texture. I know I'm only playing as that is the fun of it. When I say Bohemian, I really can claim that heritage. When I use Bohemian to describe something I have made, I think it's more of a RETRO Hippy thing?  I'm a child of Bohemian immigrants, raised as a child the 50's, and a teenager of the 60's and somewhere in between there's a little bit of a Camlot romantic or Fairy whimsical in the mix. Color, texture, layers, and all that mixed together is just too much fun to NOT play with, especially in my creation of photography props. Here is what's on the table for this weeks projects. Upcycled Photography Prop Newborn Knit Palazzo Pant and Head Wrap

I have to admit it. I'm addicted to the craft of making upcycled, photography prop, sets for newborn babies! 

I'm looking at everything I see on a hanger in a shop as a dissasembled piece waiting for new life on my work table. A woman's sweater can become 2 sets of pants and hats, and leggies and possibly a layering blanket too. A child's sweater or top I see as pants and hat or pants and leggies. 

It took me a while to get to this point because I only use really good quality knits and to cut them apart at first was a little painful as I had to reason with my logical brain that I was not destroying a perfectly good item but was re-purposing something old into something and fresh. 

Now I am quite keen on thinking upcycled is the way to go

Photography Prop Bonanza

Gorgeous day in Chicago and perfect for taking a drive to the re-sale shops looking for items to upcycle or rehab into props. I'm so addicted to making something NEW out of something OLD. 

Yesterday's finds are going to be so much fun assembling into prop sets! Now to figure out what to use for the fillers/layers, and set the colors and themes for each. 

I'm thinking gingham lace, mushroom, moss, and raggedy quilt...Hmm. 

That sounds like a plan to me!

It's a Retro Hippy Thing

It's a Retro HIPPY Thing! 

Made a few headbands from fabric medallions that remind me of patterns and colors I wore back as a teenager back in the 60's.

 When I was a kid my grandmother showed me how to make the medallions using a piece of cardboard cut into a circle. For this new batch I bought a handy little tool made of plastic with a disc that fits to hold the fabric in place while I stitched the circle to form the pleats.  

I love to make them and had a few ready to use for a pillow project. After giving it some thought I pictured the medallions on a headband or head wrap. The finished product is what you see below and as you can see my grand daughter loved them and insisted on wearing them in their own way. Georgia has hers higher while Reese has the Indian maiden look worn a little lower on her forehead. They have a cotton braided tie back for adjustable fit. *PEACE*
